Delta State’s contingent has made a stellar performance at the 2025 South-South Zonal Eliminations for the National Sports Festival, securing qualifications in 12 out of 17 team sports.

This impressive feat has been attributed to the leadership and vision of Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission.

Under Oborevwori’s guidance, the athletes bounced back from early setbacks to secure crucial victories in various sports, including football, hockey, basketball, handball, volleyball, cricket, and Abula.

The Abula mixed doubles team secured second place, while the female Abula team dominated, winning all their matches to clinch the top spot.

Delta’s basketball teams also excelled, with the male team edging Akwa Ibom 48-43 and defeating Edo 59-51, while the female team overpowered Edo 60-44 to finish second.

The handball teams followed suit, with the male squad securing a hard-fought 3-1 win over Edo, and the female team shutting out Bayelsa 3-0 to place second.

The state’s hockey teams asserted their dominance, finishing first in their categories, while the male cricket team secured a second-place finish.

Delta’s volleyball teams also earned their spots at the festival. Notably, the state achieved historic qualification in both male and female football, with the male team finishing second and the female side topping their category.

Hon Onoriode Oborevwori praised the athletes for their resilience and credited their success to the state Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori’s timely support.

According to him; “This is a proud moment for Delta. Our athletes have shown exceptional determination, and we will ensure they receive the necessary support to shine on the national stage. Governor Oborevwori has made sports development a priority, and we are confident that Delta will deliver another outstanding performance at the festival.”

He assured that efforts would be made to fine-tune the team’s preparations ahead of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State later this year.

With their qualification secured, Delta’s contingent now shifts focus to Ogun State, aiming to build on their zonal success and reinforce their dominance in Nigerian sports.
